Below the peaks of the cedar trees which cover the Kumano Mountain range, there is something that we discovered. At first it was startling and perplexing. The entire hills are made up of some kind of ruins, immensive in size. A lost civilization? These edifices had a mind-blowing exercise in human endurance and perseverance, struggling to exist in this nature-dominant region. Boulders in many sizes have been piled reinforcing the hills, with waterways intertwining and connecting each segment.

So, it is with our towers, the questions are open. Why were they built, for what purpose, with which outcome? These points are left for the viewer to decide just as we will never fully understand Kumano structures which lay hidden in the local forests.

熊野の山々を覆う杉林の峰の下で、私たちが発見したものがある。最初は驚きと、戸惑いを覚えた。山の斜面全体が巨大な遺跡のようなもので構成されているのだ。 失われた文明か？これらの構造物の連なりは、この自然が支配する地域で必死に生きようとする人間の、忍耐力と根気強さを物語る驚異的な営みであった。大小の岩石を積み上げ、勾配を補強し、水路が絡み合い、各区画をつないでいる。

そしてそれが我々の「Towers」でもある。いかなる質問も自由だ。なぜ、何のために、どのような成果をもたらすために作られたのか？それらの疑問は、森の中にひっそりとたたずむ熊野の構造物を、私たちがけっして完全に理解することはできないであろうことと同じように、見る者に委ねられているのだ。
