A sculpture as a theatre

For the project in Kumano, I want to create a kind of theatre space, which tells the story of the region through my own personal experiences of it. The sculpture can be used by the audience.

I would like to orientate my work on traditional Japanese theatre techniques, but I will combine it with my own visual language as well as contemporary media, such as video and sound recordings. My starting point will be the traditional Fusuma Karakuri theatre and through reproducing its specific methods to create movement and the illusion of space, I want to engage the local audience. The panels will be produced on-site in collaboration with the local participants. Local objects like Fusuma panels from abandoned houses as well as other materials such as fabrics, furniture and remnants of everyday life could be integrated. In this way a reference to the specific place will be drawn and personal stories connected to Kumano will be told.

劇場を彫刻として

熊野でのプロジェクトでは、自身の体験を通し“熊野の物語を伝える”と言う、一種の劇場空間を作りたいと考えています。この彫刻は、観客が動かすことができます。

日本の伝統的演劇の技術をベースに、私自身の視覚的な言語や、ビデオ、サウンド・レコーディングなどの現代的なメディアと組み合わせた作品を作りたいと考えています。

出発点は、伝統的な襖からくりであり、その動きや空間の錯覚を作り出す特別な方法を再現することです。パネルは、地元の参加者とともに現地で制作します。廃屋にある襖や、布、家具、生活用品など、その土地にあるものを組み合わせていきます。このようにして、特定の場所への言及がなされ、熊野に関連する個人的な物語が語られることになります。
