the heat and other stories

熊野での生活では、たいていの場合、少し涼しくなるのを待っています。しかし熊野はいつ出ていっても暑いですね。暑くて湿度が高い。でもだからこそ植物が生い茂り、息を呑むような風景が広がっているのだと思います。 何事にも値段はつきものですね :)

記念通り商店街のシャッターを描く仕事は大変でしたが、素晴らしい経験でした。安定しないハシゴ、乾きの早い塗料、体力を奪う暑さと毎日格闘しました。 シャッターのオーナーさんが栄養ドリンクをくれたり、老婦人二人や下駄を履いた古物商が足を止めて長い間日本語で話しかけたりしてくれて、私はうなずき微笑んでみました。 学校帰りの女子生徒が「きれい」といってくれたことも嬉しかったです。

今日も買い物に行きます。私は文字が読めないので、パッケージにどんな絵が描かれているのか、いつも注意深く見ています。チョコではなく小豆のロールケーキを買ってしまったことが何度もあります。ああ、そうだ、ここではゴミの分別は科学なんだ。道路にゴミ箱がないので、一日中ゴミを持ち歩いています。熊野の生活にも少しずつ慣れてきて、本当に快適です。

Most of the time I wait for the weather to get a little cooler. In Kumano it is always hot, no matter what time of day. Hot and humid, but that's why the vegetation is so lush and the landscape is breathtaking! Everything has its price :)

Working at the shutter in the shopping street was tough, but an incredible experience - I had a daily struggle with the ladder that didn't want to stay stable, with the paints that dried too fast and with the heat that sucked all my energy out of me. The owner of the display provided me with energy drinks, some pedestrians, like two elderly ladies or the antique dealer in geta sandals, stopped and talked to me for a long time in Japanese - I nodded and smiled.  Schoolgirls walking home from school said the painting was "beautiful " - I was so happy.

Today I went shopping again. Since I can't read Japanese characters, I always have to be very mindful and pay close attention to what picture is shown on the package. It has happened to me many times that I bought rolls with red beans instead of chocolate. Ah yes, and the garbage separation is like a science here. Since there are no trash cans on the street, I carry all the trash with me all day. I'm slowly adapting to life in Kumano!
